Stevns Klint

Stevns Klint

Stevns Klint are cliffs south of Copenhagen (~75km) which are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. In the so-called Fish Clay layer in Stevns Klint, traces of mass extinction that started 65.5 million years ago can be found. On the beach it is still possible to find small fossils if a person is lucky enough!

After leaving Copenhagen and getting away from the highway the landscape suddenly changes and small cute villages can be seen all the way, which makes you feel like you left big city far far behind you!

There are a lot of attractions that can be found on the cliffs.

The stairs down from the cliff to the sea can be found in  Højerup. It is possible to use them around the clock, all year round.

There is also really charming church – Højerup Gamle Kirke. Some part of it fell down but the rest is still standing on the very edge of the cliff. It is open  in the daytime during the summer and you can see amazing views from small balcony inside the church.

A little bit further along the way there is a lighthouse. It is called Stevns Fyr. Actually there are two lighthouses, the small one that was built in ~1750 and the bigger one erected in 1878.

It is possible to enter the lighthouse for free:
All weekdays 11:00 am – 3:00 pm
Saturday and Sunday 12:00 noon – 3:00 pm

In the sunny day you can actually see Sweden and Copenhagen from the top!

While I was driving along the cliffs I stumbled across Holtug Chalk Quarry. Until 1972, limestone and chalk were extracted there and now it is a protected Natura 2000 area.

It was my first time seeing the quarry and I was really impressed by a huge hole in the ground ;p

Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to visit the Cold War museum and some other attractions. You can read more about them and the area here.

The whole cliff area is a perfect bike route and there were actually many people who did that.

For the cliffs locations check out the map:

+ Most of the attractions are free and open for public viewing (check opening hours when planning though)

+ really nice views (cliffs and the surrounding villages)

+ great idea for a biking trip

– It is really cold and windy on the cliff so take a jacket or a blouse

-Not as high as Møns Klint
