Exploring Northern Germany by Car

North Germany Trip

May and June in Denmark are always great travel months thanks to all those long weekends—it would almost feel like a waste not to use them! Since I’m pregnant and flying gets a bit tricky the further along you are, we thought: why not keep it simple this time and do a little road trip somewhere nearby? That way, if anything came up, we could easily head back home. Northern Germany felt like the perfect choice for a cozy car adventure.

We planned four days in total, but thanks to a less-than-inspiring weather forecast (hello, endless rain showers), we decided to cut it short by one day. Still, we managed to see quite a lot!

Starting from Copenhagen, we drove across Jutland and crossed the border in Flensburg. We’d already explored that city on a past trip (you can read about it here), so this time we went straight for the Hedeby Viking Museum—once one of the biggest Viking cities of its time. After a short visit, we continued towards Hamburg.

Now, the drive took longer than expected because we stopped at every single electronics store along the way in search of a new Nintendo Switch. Apparently, they were sold out everywhere… until finally, jackpot in Hamburg! My fiancé’s excitement level? Let’s just say: priceless. 😛

We spent about a day and a half in Hamburg soaking up the vibe. Honestly, we could’ve stayed much longer. The city is buzzing with energy, full of things to see and do, and I’ve already made a mental note to come back—especially since I found out teamLab is opening there at the end of 2025!

Next up was Lübeck, a UNESCO-listed gem that completely charmed us (even if we had to dodge rain half the time). I wish we’d had more hours there, but on the bright side, I learned their Christmas market is supposed to be magical—so I think a winter visit is now on the cards.

Our last major stop was the fairy-tale–like Schwerin Castle. Often called one of Germany’s most beautiful castles, and I can totally see why. It was picture-perfect and definitely worth the detour. After yet another downpour there, though, we decided to skip Wismar and head back home to Copenhagen.

Even though it ended up being a shorter trip than planned, we discovered some amazing places and added a bunch more to our “next time” list. Rain or not, northern Germany won’t be our last road trip for sure!
