Middelaldercentret – most authentic medieval village in Europe

Middelaldercentret

Middelaldercentret, or The Medieval Centre in English, is an experimental living history archaeological open-air museum in Nykøbing Falster, Denmark, which depicts the middle ages in the Denmark of the late 14th and early 15th centuries.

It features a typical Danish market town from the middle ages with many different workshops, a harbor with boats, and villagers’ houses. All the employees are dressed in clothes from this period, walking and working the old trade. They are very enthusiastic about the craft and do a lot of research about old techniques like rope making, cloth coloring, war tools or pigment creation, and many more. If you are interested in something, they are more than happy to tell you all about their work. So don’t be afraid and ask a lot of questions 🙂

Besides normal museum activities, the Middelaldercentret does extensive research within the middle ages and different medieval technologies. They reconstructed weapons, ships, clothing and have a reputation for being the most authentic place in Europe within the medieval period. Because of it, the medieval town has been used as a setting for many movies, documentaries, and TV series (list on Danish Wikipedia under this link).

Trebuchet

In 1989 Middelaldercentret constructed a trebuchet that was the biggest one in the world. Then in 2005, they helped to build a copy of their “Store Blide” (Big Trebuchet, literally) for Warwick Castle in England, and as the beam was 10 cm longer than their own trebuchet, it made it the world’s largest. In 2011, the beam on “Store Blide” was replaced and currently is 5 cm longer than the one at Warwick, making it the world’s largest once again. If you ever wondered how the trebuchet works, you can’t miss a demonstration where they shoot a stone ball into the lake!

Medieval Center’s Technology Park

Right outside medieval village stretches a forest where you can experience the machines from the Middle Ages. Not only of Leonardo Da Vinci but also of other medieval inventors you might not have heard before. So see, try and discover cars, lifts, aircraft, the perpetual motion machine, and many other great inventions of the Middle Ages.

The Magic Forest

A meandering pathway leads you through nooks and crannies of a forest and gives you a glimpse into what folk of the Middle Ages believed lived right next to them. So take a trip and discover different magical creatures inhabiting the neighborhood centuries ago, and who knows, maybe you really need to put your own stick on the pile of sticks for the beast not to chase you down 😉

Griffenholm

Griffenholm is a new attraction at the Medieval Center. You can follow professor Julius Abraham Griffenholm and his assistants as they gather knowledge about fabled medieval animals and other supernatural beings. Experience Griffenholm, the houses in the treetops, hear the stories and feel the mystical beasts get close.

And if you feel adventurous, book a mystery tour when the darkness approaches and all the sounds are magnified. We haven’t tried that one yet as it was not available, but it does sound interesting!

You can also find there two escape rooms. So enter the year 1900 and try the eerie task of solving one or two of Griffenholmsm’s secrets.
