Downtown Kyoto

Nishiki Market

Let’s start our Kyoto visit from downtown. As I wrote before, Kyoto has so many places to visit and see, that it is impossible to do it during a day or two. It is usually a good idea to start from downtown as most probably you will stay in the hotel nearby and it’s an excellent way to begin experiencing Kyoto.

Nishiki Market

Want to try some typical Japanese food? Head to the Nishiki Market, known as Kyoto’s kitchen. You don’t have to buy things, in most of the stores they let you sample the food for free or for a small fee 🙂 But you are going to end up buying something, either way 🙂 You can also try some food at one of many small restaurants around.
It is a good idea to visit the market in the morning when all the food stalls are open. In the afternoon some of them might close, even though the market is supposed to be open 9:00 – 18.00.

You have to try a couple of things while visiting the market:

  • Nukazuke –  a traditional style of pickled vegetables that evolved during the Edo period. I fell in love with them!
  • Misozuke –  another type of pickle where the vegetable is preserved in the salty miso paste.
  • Fish – if you’re into fish, you are going to love it there!

You can also get some spices, I got some for the rice, was great!

Teramachi shopping arcade

Right next to Nishiki market there is another shopping arcade. You can buy there different souvenirs, t-shirts, etc. There are also many shops with art, books and religious items. You will be able to find everything you want.
