Rubjerg Knude Fyr – A lighthouse’s struggle against the sands of time

Rubjerg Knude Fyr

Rubjerg Knude Fyr stands on top of a sand dune on the edge of the North Sea and is an excellent example of a constant fight between humans and nature. Initially, in 1900, the lighthouse was built 200 meters inland. During 119 years the sea got closer and closer, and the wind blew large amounts of sand up from the cliff. People tried to save Rubjerg Knude Fyr by planting bushes and other plants around but ultimately failed and the lighthouse got consumed by sand. As sometimes, the sand dunes made it impossible to see the guiding light, the lighthouse stopped operating in 1968. But the fight for this iconic landmark was not over.

In October 2019, a huge project was carried out where the lighthouse was moved 70 meters inland to protect it from crashing into the sea. This operation should secure its future for another 40 years as coastal erosion in front of Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse is estimated to claim approximately 2 meters of land annually.

While visiting make sure to climb on top of the lighthouse and marvel at nature and the amazing landscape surrounding the area of Rubjerg Knude and Lønstrup Klint that has been designated as a European Natura 2000 area.
