Christmas markets in Copenhagen

Tivoli

Christmas have finally arrived to Copenhagen! Well, arrived two weeks ago, but who is counting xD  Anyway, that means that Copenhagen gets filled with Christmas markets full of lights, Glögg and hygge !!

For those who don’t know what hygge is, then well, try to imagine dark winter night, snow everywhere and you sitting in front of your fire-place covered with a thick blanket, drinking hot coco with someone you love. What do you feel imagining it? Yup, that’s exactly that feeling!  I guess, closest to English would be word coziness. But it’s so much more! It takes some time spent in Denmark to fully get it 🙂 But you will have a chance to experience tiny bit of it during Christmas!!

There is plenty happening in the city already right now with even more events in the upcoming days! I will show you photos from all the places I have been to already and short notes of those I would like to visit, given some time.  Maybe, this will give you some ideas what to do during the weekend. Compared to last year the Christmas markets looked a little bit poor ;( But let us start with what I think is total must visit during this season and a place that will never dissapoint you – Tivoli.

Tivoli

Tivoli is an amusement park you have to visit at least twice : during Halloween and Christmas! It is a really famous place, being one of the oldest amusement parks in Europe. If you think I am insane writing about going to amusement park during winter, don’t 🙂 Tivoli is above all, a park where you can stroll around and experience magic of Christmas!! During that period the park is filled with holidays decorations, lights and little nisse (elves) everywhere. There are many stalls and huts selling Christmas decorations and food. There is also a new place called HonningkageslottetHoney Cake Castle, where you can see nisse operated baking machine and decorate delicious honey hearts by yourself! The honey for hearts comes from Tivoli’s own bee hives. How cool is that!

Around the Tivoli lake you can see willow trees covered in lights – and there is around 300.000 of them there!

If the description didn’t convince you, take a look at the pictures 🙂

Deutsche Julemarked on Højbro Plads

If you feel like going around some cool stalls and wooden cabins, drinking some tasty Glögg then you should visit this market. If you are not into mulled wine, then try some of apple punch made from sweet apple juice with aniseed, orange and cloves. Soo good! The market is located in the heart of Copenhagen next to one of the busiest streets – Strøget, so there is no chance you will miss it!

Go check it out, it looks really nice with 180.000 sparking Christmas lights, surrounded with wooded cabins filled with Christmas smells 🙂 There are many hand-made items that you will just fall in love with. And candies! There were so many candies all around that I couldn’t stop glaring at them 🙂

Christmas market in Nyhavn harbour

If you ever saw a commercial of Copenhagen then you surely have seen historical Nyhavn. This place is a basically a postcard from Denmark with cute old houses standing along the canal. In the old days it used to be a busy port, now it is really cozy place with many restaurants.

During the Christmas the canal transformes to a Christmas market with stalls located along the pier selling decorations, presents and food. While visiting, try Glögg, mulled wine, and æbleskiver, pancake like balls that you eat with jam and sugar powder, nomnomnom! Most of the restaurants are serving Christmas lunches, dinners and snacks so if you are hungry, try some good Danish food.

It last between 11 November – 23 December 2016.

Hans Christian Andersen Christmas market on Axeltorv

It is located right next to Tivoli so just go and check it out on the way to the gardens. It looks really nice, with sparkling lights. Even though it really small and offers similar items to what you could see in other markets, check this one out as well 😉

Some information:

It last between 18 November – 22 December 2016.

The entrance is free.

Remake Christmas on Nytorv

This Christmas market might be really interesting place to go. The whole Christmas village will be built from recycled wood and other materials, made entirely by volunteers.  The idea of green Christmas sounds really cool and unique. As it is not open yet, I was only able to see the stalls but I will definitely be back.

Some information:

It last between 1 December – 21 December 2016.

The market is open:

Monday – Thursday: 10:00 – 18:00
Friday: 10:00 – 19:00
Saturday: 11:00 – 19:00
Sunday: 11:00 – 19:00

The entrance is free.

Christmas market in Freetown Christiania

Another really famous place. Christiania is a city inside a city, which is little different from the rest of Denmark. It has been established in 70′ by some hippies and since then became a famous place. I think mostly because of selling weed (recently I think it has been closed, but not sure), awesome Christiania bikes and crafts.

In December there will be Christmas market held in the city of Christiania where you will be able to by some Christmas hand crafts and eat some good food in their coffees.

I have not yet had occasion to visit this place as it’s not open yet, but I will have some time I will post some photos later.

Some information:

It last between 9 December – 20 December 2016 between 12:00 -20:00

The entrance is free.

Christmas market in Kødbyen

Kødbyen, Meatpacking District, used to be a meat industry place, full of butcher, but in recent years it became really cool neighbourhood to hang out with friends and eat some great food. It is open 24 h so you can find something good to eat all the time.

This year they have decided to throw their own Christmas market, so if you are not busy, pop by for some delicious food – and I mean DELICIOUS!

Some information:

The market happens on 10-11 December  2016.

The entrance is free.
